Our Stingrays95 "Rush" team ventured to Orillia to compete in the Trillium division of the 2011 Challenge Cup. The day started slowly as the girls were seeded in a tough pool and dropped both of their matches 2-0, to Durham Attack and Barrie Elite. They were very competitive against Barrie, who ended up in the semis, but ended up losing a heart-breaker second set 25-23.  After a break and an amazing lunch, the team couldn't seem to get untracked as they were mauled by the Georgian Cubs 2-0. In both games "Rush" gave up runs of 8 points to one server, which contributed to the team's downfall. It was also probably the poorest serve receiving performances that the girls had as a team all day.  In the final match of the day, "Rush" fought hard in a see-saw battle with Midland Vista. Even thought the girls were down 8-7 at the turn and 12-9 at one point, they persevered behind some consistent serving, great defense, tough attacking and a solo stuff block to close the match with a well deserved 15-12 victory in the third set. The celebratory chocolate cake and donuts were a welcome treat to a long day!  Overall the team finished in 9th place with a 2W-7L record. Throughout the 4 matches the team used 6 different starting line-ups. All of the athletes did an awesome job as substitutes when called on to serve or replace a position player. Everyone seemed to be prepared and ready to go in at any time during the matches.  The official stats for the tournament were highlighted by 66 attack "kills" versus 32 attack errors, along with 26 serving aces and 17 serving errors.

The Stingrays '96 Glide competed this past weekend in their second tournament of the season.  The girls played well in the morning round-robin, finishing second in their pool with a record of 1W-3L.  In the playoffs, the team suffered two tough losses, with both matches going to a third set.  In their final set of the day, Glide had a close 16-14 loss in the third set, and they finished the day tied for 11th place.  The girls played well all day, and had much improved teamwork compared to their last tournament.  They are back at practice this week, and are all excited to be working hard in preparation for provincials in April.

Our 16U girls' teams both competed this past weekend at the McGregor Cup.

Stingrays 95 Rush battled their way through a tough day, as they were missing 5 athletes.  Only 6 girls were able to make it, and they played strongly all day.  Rush finished third in their pool after the morning play.  The girls played very well in the face of some tough competition.  After a Stingrays-vs-Stingrays showdown in the quarter finals, Rush faced E381 in the consolation rounds, losing in a heartbreaking 3rd set.  Rush finished the day tied for 9th place.  With only 6 athletes present, fatigue had really set in by the end of the day.  Despite being exhausted, the whole team had a great attitude and put in an amazing effort.  On the whole, passing was excellent, and setting and attacking were consistent all day.  Well done Rush!

Stingrays 95 Whip came out of the morning play undefeated, having beat E381 and Interclub 15U in straight sets.  After winning an exciting (and fun) quarter finals match against the Stingrays 95 Rush, Whip moved on to the semi finals, where they faced the Toronto Diamonds Sapphire.  The Diamonds dominated the first set of the match, but Whip came back with a vengeance, taking the second set handily and winning the match in the third set.  In the finals, Whip won the first set against the Titans, and after making a huge comeback in the second set lost it 28-26.  In the third set of a very exciting match, Whip pulled off a well-deserved victory, taking the gold medal!  Congratulations to all the athletes on Stingrays 95 Whip on the win!  The victory moves Whip up to the Championship division for the next tournament.

Thanks to all the parents from both of our teams who cheered us on at the tournament.  We had a lot of spectators, and both Rush and Whip appreciated your support!
